The five-cent coin was critical to the national economy and used in vending machines and phone booths. Ending production was not an option. The U.S. Mint’s swift action in 1942 freed up millions of pounds
of nickel. Incredibly, nickel was more valuable for the war effort than silver, so nickels were made in 35% silver for the duration of the war, 1942-1945. To help identify the coins as silver, the “emergency” wartime 35% silver nickels are the only Jefferson nickels with the mint mark on the reverse, above the dome of Monticello. What’s more, 1942 was the the first time ever that the Philadelphia Mint’s “P” mark appeared on any U.S. coin, and you are guaranteed to receive a first-year 1942 “P” mint coin in this set. Due to increasing scarcity of all wartime silver nickels – and the small number of coins remaining in uncirculated condition – we were able to assemble only a limited number of complete sets.
